An Insider's Tips To Selecting An Appropriate Wine Rack Plan

By Celine Yong

Along with the fast growing popularity of wine collecting, building wine racks is now becoming a popular hobby among wine enthusiasts. Poring over wood wine rack plans and shopping for timber and tools are now common weekend activities.

Wine enthusiasts today are very fortunate as there are many DIY wine rack plans available for them to choose from. Whether they are experienced or new to woodworking, they are sure to find a wine rack plan with a design and capacity that meets their needs.

The average size of a wine collection in the household has grown significantly. With the well-known health benefits of consuming red wine especially and the many varieties available today, it is no longer surprising that wine enthusiasts are stocking more varieties as well as more wine bottles than before. There is a growing need to properly store wine, wine glasses and other wine accessories.

Detailed wine rack plans that provide more flexibility and provide for the storing of wine cases, wine glasses and other accessories in addition to storing wine bottles are now generally preferred.

This being said, depending on the décor within the home and the lifestyle and wine storage needs of the wine enthusiast, it would still be practical for the wine and woodworking enthusiast to keep a collection of different types of DIY wine rack plans on standby. This is because one can have more than one wine rack within the home, each wine rack serving a different function. For example, we could have wine racks for storing wine, one wine rack to showcase wine, and another wine rack for serving wine and entertaining.

By keeping a collection of detailed wine rack plans on hand, as and when a new wine storage or showcase need arises, all the wine enthusiast needs to do is to dip into his or her collection of DIY wine rack plans and start building a wine rack based on the selected wine rack plan.

How does one determine which wine rack plan is for which purpose? The first and most important step in choosing a wine rack plan is to determine where your new wine rack or storage will be situated.

Wine rack plans and storage have been developed for use in different areas:

  • Table or Counter Top Wine Rack Plans

Table top wine racks are great space-savers. They usually provide a more decorative function and they typically add an accent to the room while providing an area to store wine. These wine racks are great for small gatherings. They are also more suitable for smaller wine collections ranging from 1 to 12 bottles.
  • Wine Furniture / Wine Tower / Wine Rack Cabinet Plans

Wine furniture is suitable for small to medium-sized collections. Wine furniture includes wine cabinets and wine towers which can double up as the focal showcase piece in a room as well as serve as a storage solution for one's wine collection. Wine rack cabinets will typically be equipped with a solid wood door on the lower part and upper doors made of glass for easy viewing. You can store drinkable wine as well as wine which you wish to keep for a considerable period of time.
  • Floor Wine Rack Plan

Floor wine racks can be used as decorative pieces as well as storage for small to very large wine collections. Floor wine racks are a great alternative to wall mounted wine racks if the walls are not ideal for attaching wall mounted furniture. In addition, floor wine racks can easily be used to complement surrounding pieces of furniture by applying the appropriate finish and colour.
  • Wine Cart And Wine Trolley Plans

Wine carts and trolleys are multifunctional. They  allow you to easily move wine and other items from the kitchen to other rooms or even outdoors with ease when entertaining guests. Another example of a multifunctional wine rack would be to incorporate it in a kitchen island for the purpose of saving space as well.
  • Stackable and Modular Wine Rack Plans

Modular or stackable wine racks allow you to start small and easily add to your collection as needed. This option is cost effective and can be used for all types of situations and wine collectors. Such racks are especially useful when storing wine in cellars. If you have a wine collection that comprises many bottles of just a few varieties of wine, you could consider selecting wine rack plans of stackable bins or diamond cubes. Conversely, if you have a wine collection that comprises of many varieties each with relatively low number of bottles, then a stackable shelf-like wine rack plan would be more ideal. You can designate each shelf clearly labelled for each variety for ease of management.
  • Wall Mounted Wine Rack Plans

Wall mounted wine racks are great space savers and allow you to display your wine collection in the best possible light while preserving your wine. Some wall mounted wine racks
cradle the entire bottle, evenly distributing its weight while others are designed to hold the bottles by inserting the neck of the bottle into a padded hole in the wall mounted wine rack. This latter design makes it easier to read the labels and remove the wine bottles from the wine rack. Many wall mounted wine racks are also modular in nature. Additional shelves can be easily added to accomodate one's growing wine collection.

There is a very comprehensive collection of wine rack plans that provide step-by-step instructions to help you build all the different types of wine racks as described above.
